Conservative Party of BC Leader Lorne Doerkson took the stage Saturday to claim victory to a background of fireworks and music.
“B. C. is definitely blue,” Doerksen said as he grabbed the podium. He opened his victory speech by thanking his family, party volunteers, BC NDP Leader David Eby and BC Green Party Leader Emily Lowan. Then, he recounted his past.
Lorne Doerkson led the BC Conservatives to a historic majority, defeating David Eby’s NDP.
The Conservatives plan to cut taxes, expand LNG production and logging and “cut red tape like it’s never been cut before.”

How do you fully unpack a film like Fjord? Romanian director Cristian Mungiu’s film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year. It’s a complex moral drama about white conservative migrants from Romania who arrive in a remote village in Norway and find themselves embroiled in a court case after being accused of abusing their children. It’s a film that withholds rather than divulges: we never see the cause of the bruise that raises the alarm. It’s a slippery undertaking that tries to navigate the issue without taking a side. However engrossing this might be on a narrative level, it also plays a dangerous game of false equivalence. Can we really compare progressivism run amok with fascism?
For better and for worse, Mungiu doesn’t fully commit to an answer. The movie does not ask us to back the Gheorghiu family uncritically, despite (mostly) taking their point of view. While loving and well-intentioned, their traditional values emerge as close-minded and, even without corporeal violence, borderline abusive.

Edward Said was always a familiar name at my dinner table. Since I was a child, I walked past our oak bookshelf that carried the spine of his magnum opus Orientalism, intrigued by its cover image of a thick blue snake coiled around the torso of a young boy. My father would listen to Said’s lectures at his home office. Sometimes he would invite me, peering from the doorway, to listen; sometimes I would catch stray phrases. From this early osmosis, I came to a vague yet strong sense that Said spoke about “our part of the world” – whatever that meant to a Muslim Pakistani child raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada – in a truthful and crucial way.
In December 2023, jarred by the beginnings of the genocide, my father put on Said’s lecture “The Myth of the Clash of Civilizations” for the two of us to listen to. Said dismantles Samuel P. Huntington’s book “The Clash of Civilizations” by describing in detail the degrading, dishonest portrayals of non-Western civilizations that form its premise. My father had made us apple cinnamon tea, like listening to Said was a cozy movie night. We’d thought of Gaza, cried, and wondered what we might do with Said’s words.
